Portland (Maine) Meetup Thursday, September 6 with Lambert and Yves

For those of you who live in Maine or the norther parts of New England, we hope you have the time to join Lambert and me in Portland the Thursday after the Labor Day weekend for some lively conversation and grog.

We don’t have a meetup venue yet and could use reader ideas. Lambert would like to be able to see the water if that does not wind up being problematic either in terms of cost or noise level. We guesstimate we’ll have 10 to 15 people.

We’ll start at 5:00 PM and go until 8:00 PM.

Hope to see you soon!

Damn, I just came back from there (north of Portland, closer to the Deere Isle area (though not that tony spot). Maine is gorgeous in September. Be sure to hunt for chanterelle and other woodland mushrooms.

That place is pretty close to my house and it is a quick drive across the bridge from Portland. I’ve haven’t been there yet myself and have heard mixed reviews from the locals on the food, but since the plan isn’t for a dinner anyway it might be the perfect place if they have a bar area that can accommodate 15-20 people. It’s more the type of place people stop into after a day on their boat than a crowded destination restaurant from what I understand so they would probably welcome the business.

I would also suggest DeMillos for another place on the water: http://www.dimillos.com They do have function rooms upstairs as well as a bar area downstairs. I’ve been in the function rooms before and not all of them have a great view of the water.

Surprisingly there aren’t a ton of waterfront restaurants in Portland due to the city’s working waterfront policy that reserved the waterfront real estate for fishing-related businesses for many years. That is changing pretty rapidly right now under development pressure but there still aren’t a lot of waterfront places. There are a ton of other non waterview places though and a Thursday night after labor day probably wouldn’t be too packed to accommodate the NC group.

I don’t get out much because it costs too much, but there is a small local chain in DC called Busboys and Poets that has meeting places close to Metro stops. It would be great to have a DC meet up. There’s some new places on the redeveloped DC waterfront also, but I haven’t been there.

It’s not on the water, but I love Novare Res, a beer garden.

I will see if I can go up with my mother, 81, who is an NC addict!

How about a Manhattan meet up 9/27, near Union Square, the night before the second MMT conference? I don’t know the area. so can’t suggest a venue.

Frankly I am not at all happy with the conference organizers. I went to Kansas City last year and had a ton of people come up to me and say, “Why aren’t you speaking?” I don’t want to be in that position again and so I am not going.

Hard ass… mean that in the nicest way imo… snicker…

BTW…. ouch in anticipation of getting the standing stick action…

Yet the above is exactly why, regardless of anything else, you have my undying respect and admiration e.g. I know when I read your thoughts I’m dealing with intellect and not a bunch of environmental conditioning.

        Mee Lady…
